The Best Aquaculture Practices program currently certifies feed mills; shrimp hatcheries and farms; tilapia, channel catfish and Pangasius farms; and processing plants. Shrimp, tilapia and catfish in various frozen and prepared forms are now available with the "Best Aquaculture Practices Certified" mark.
The Global Aquaculture Alliance, the global standards setter for aquaculture seafood, is currently expanding Best Aquaculture Practices certification to include standards for other fish species. Look for these additional BAP-certified products in the near future.
The new certifications will incorporate many of the same parameters outlined in the earlier BAP standards. The guidelines for issues like habitat conservation, worker and community rights, responsible production practices and food safety are similar, regardless of species.
